Overview

Websense Enterprise and Websense Web Security Suite both install with Windows NT Directory as the default directory service. The other supported directory service is Windows Active Directory. If your network uses Active Directory, you cannot assign policies to users until you reconfigure the directory service settings in Websense Enterprise or Websense Security Suite. Filtering can occur with the wrong directory service selected, but user data is logged incorrectly.

Have the following available before you start to configure Active Directory:

  • IP address of your Global Catalog Server or the Fully Qualified Domain Name
  • A user account with privileges to query the Global Catalog Server

To configure Active Directory:
Show me how. Time: 3:20

  1. In Websense Manager, select Server > Settings, and then select Directory Service.
  2. Select Active Directory, Native Mode.
  3. Click Add to configure Active Directory in the Add Domain Forest dialog box.
  4. Click OK. The IP address of the Global Catalog Server or the Fully Qualfied Domain name appear in the Domain Forests field.
  5. Click OK to save these changes.
  6. Attempt to add a user.
    • If Active Directory is configured properly, you should see all the user directory objects in your system.
    • If you are not able to view user objects when the navigation tree is expanded, check the following:
      • Ensure that the Global Catalog Server you entered is actually a Global Catalog Server (not all Domain Controllers have this role).
      • Make sure you entered the Fully Qualified Domain Name properly.
      • Ensure that the account name is spelled properly.
      • Re-enter your password. Make sure that the caps lock and number lock are set appropriately.
      • Try an account with a higher permission level (for example, a domain administrator account rather than a regular user account).
