| Is there any way to generate bandwidth usage reports more granular than on a per day basis? For instance, users consuming the most bandwidth over the last 15 minutes or 1 hour etc. | This feature is currently not available. Please put in a feature request from the product feedback section on the website. |
| Will 64bit support be available in the next release? | No. |
| Is SQL server on MS Hyper-v? | Yes, but Websense components are not supported on Hyper-V. |
| SQL on VMware is not supported by Microsoft, correct? | Yes that is correct, SQL is not supported by Microsoft currently on VMware, they do support it on Hyper-V |
| Is there an ETA for SQL 2008 support? | Most likely with version 7.5. |
| At what point do you upgrade from MSDE to SQL? | Depending on the amount of data generated within the network you may want to switch to SQL as MSDE partitions by default can only be 1.5 GB, so if more and more data is generated then you may want to consider rolling over by size which means you can have fewer number of partitions. This will make database management easier. Also MSDE has a very limited feature set so for larger organizations we recommend using full SQL. |
| On page 27 of the deployment guide for Websense 7.1, it says websense in a virtual environment is supported and it gives the specs for the virtual machines. Can you please clarify what you said about log server not being supported in a virtual environment? | That recommendation has been corrected before the webinar, if you check the Deployment guide now it clearly says that it is not supported except for demonstration purposes. |
| Do you anticipate future support of MSDE under Windows server 2008 and/or will you soon be supporting SQL Server 2008? | MSDE support on 2008 is unlikely. We should be having support for SQL 2008 with 7.5. |
| Can that log record consolidation be disabled AFTER install? | Yes, you can do it from the Logserver Configuration. |
| If the log database is hosted in a separate phisycal server, can logserver be running in a VMware vsphere vm? | No, Logserver service is not supported on VMware. |
| Are all the components of Websense now combined into the one GUI interface accessed thru the webpage? | Yes. |
| Will IE 8 be supported? | With 7.5 it may be supported. |
| Is there any way to change the setting to "minimal logging" if this was not set during installation of the log server? | Yes these options can be changed after installation from the Websense Manager and the LogServer configuration. |
| Is MSDE supported on Windows server 2008? | No, MSDE is not supported on Server 2008. |
| How does this run under Citrix? | Logserver service has to be installed on Windows or Linux platform, please review the supported platforms section. |
| Why doesn?t Websense support IE 8? | It has not been tested fully at the moment and due to security restrictions on IE 8 certain components on the manager do not seem to work as expected with IE8. |
| When i click on hits, it comes back and says before requesting details; it is recommended that you drill down to a number less than 100,000. | Yes, with a number less than 100,000 reports will be generated in a timely manner, so according to our performance testing this is the recommended value. |
| When you go futher into an investigative report, is it possible to increase the Display X results number to higher than 25? | No that is the current maximum available number. |
| When you do a quick investigate of a user, are you able to save the output? | Yes you can save it in PDF or XLS. |
| If a user visits yahoo.com, is there a way to report only on that site, and none of the other links on the site? | Yes if you have log consolidation turned on then requests made within a short period of time to a single domain are logged as 1 record. |
| What is the flow of data if you have multiple log servers with a central database? | Flow of data will still be the same, instead of one log server; multiple logserver will be sending records to the same database. You can also have multiple logserver services shipping logs to a central logserver. Please visit the KB 3466 for more information. |
| Why is there no synchronization tool for a multi-policy (redundant) server installation? | Please submit a feature request using product feedback section on the website. |
| Is Websense supported on VMware for the security suite? | Websense components are supported on VMware with the exception of Logserver service. The Logserver service should be installed on a physical box. |
| Where is the debug.txt file stored? | It is stored in the Program Files\Websense\Bin directory. |
| How would you run the debug if you?re running Linux environment with Logserver and MYSQL? | From the /Websense/bin directory you can run Logserver.exe ?c -debug. |
| In the Websense Manager when you access the Log Database you get a website cannot be displayed what can be the issue? | Please raise a support ticket for this problem. It could be related to the relevant page missing in the Explorer directory. |
| Has the reporter package for Red Hat been updated to the same level of reporting that is in the Windows version, for Websense 7.1? | Yes with version 7.1, it is all included in the Websense Manager, which is similar on both platforms. |
| In regards to Investigative Reports, most users are logged correctly; however, some users appear only as the IP address they are accessing Internet from. What is causing this? | This could be a user identification issue, please raise a support ticket to get this investigated. |
| Report request hangs for quite awhile when trying to run reports. Does this have to do with the date selection being in multiple files? | This depends on how big the database is and also what kind of specification you have for SQL server, if it takes too long to process requests then this could be the reason for reports taking longer to run. |
| At times, Websense just stops running. We do not see anything in the logs as to why. We find out when a user's manager notices they are on restricted sites. How can I know right away when something is wrong with Websense rather than rely on it being reported by a user? | You can check on the today page to see if any alerts are generated regarding any services not running, there are some alerts that you can setup for subscription exceeded etc. |
| If you set roller for a month, does that mean you cannot get reports for activity older than 1 month? | No this is not correct. Roll over options simply decide when a new database partition will be created. Reports will still be available for older months from other partitions as long as you are not deleting partitions that are older than 30 days. |
| The DBA's in my company do not like the "roll over" option because they constantly have to change their database backup scripts when a new database is created (i.e. when it rolls over). Is there a "cleanup script" that would clean out the old data from the existing database, rather than roll it over to a new partition? | You can set Maintenance option to Automatically delete partitions when all days in the partition are older than 30 days |
| Is there a recommendation for larger organizationss as to what size to set the rollover for log database? | For larger organizations you may want to rollover on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. Normally large organizations would have lots of data being generated so if you set it to the normal 5 GB size you may end up with too many partitions. So try setting it up for a weekly rollover. |
| I had the options set for one year, but they never deleted. I think the skrinking options, kept the database to a newer date. How do I stop this from happening, so the old database will delete. | Ensure that the maintenance task is running and is successfully completed each week. If maintenance does not complete then you will see this behaviour. |
| Can you explain partitions? How do I determine how big to make it and how many do I need? | This depends on the size of your organizations. For smaller organizations you can set the rollover monthly, for larger organizations you can set it either to weekly or by size, recommended is 5GB but if you are reaching this size almost every other day then consider rolling over weekly. |
| What is the size (in MB) of Database Rollover suggested by best practices for a very large DB growth (over 40gb every month)? | 5 GB is the recommended, however this will mean that for 40 GB you will have about 8 partitions every month. If you are removing older partitions every 60 ? 90 days then this will be fine. You may also consider setting rollover to every 2 weeks. |
| What is best practice for the DB partitions initianal size and growth in (MB)? | Initial size 2GB for MDF with a 512 MB growth. |
| How much will full URL reporting add to the database size? | If the Log Database is configured to log the full URLs, each URL recorded can be up to 1000 characters, or 2000 bytes (2 KB) in length. When full URL logging is turned off, a log entry requires only 500 bytes per URL. |
| can I generate a report that shows the full URLs? | Yes if you are logging full urls then you can see this if you run a detail report by URL. |
| What is best practice for the LOG initianal size and growth size set up in (MB) on the DB Partition creation (path: c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\)? | Initial size 2GB for MDF with a 512 MB growth. |
| I have a partition that indicates a week's timespan. Now no additional data is being logged. Where does that timeframe come from? | The timeframe is actually recorded in a table called Partitions within the SQL server, so each time a partition is updated some timeframe will be recorded and that is what you will see on the Log Database option. |
