Pharming
As web based threats to corporate security continue to evolve, the number of attacks are becoming more frequent and dangerous. In 2005, the FBI reported 87% of organizations experienced a computer security incident over the past 12 months. To be protected, it is important to understand the different methods of attack, one of if which is pharming.
Pharming is a form of online identity theft that employs both social engineering and technical subterfuge to steal consumers' personal identity data and financial account credentials. The most popular attack is when a hacker makes an illegal change to a DNS server and directs the user to the URL of a fraudulent website. The user intends to visit a legitimate site, but is redirected to a counterfeit website used to elicit confidential information from the users for fraudulent purposes.
Phishing – a more widespread scam that is similar to pharming – baits a computer user into providing confidential information by directing the user to visit a counterfeit or phished website. At these phishing sites, the user is asked to enter or update personal information such as passwords and account numbers.
Phishing and pharming attacks are similar, but equally dangerous. A successful phishing or pharming attack can be a devastating blow to any company. Many phishing and pharming attacks are engineered to steal corporate intellectual property, customer information, financial information and more. Imagine the potential harm an attack could have if a company’s data was obtained.
