DEFINITION

Spyware is software covertly added to a user’s computer that will monitor web surfing activity and relay that information to third parties. Spyware is typically used by advertisers for marketing purposes but can also be used by others for fraudulent activity. Spyware is often installed on a user’s computer in combination with a selected free-download, but may also be installed just by visiting a website.
