EDUCATION SOLUTIONS

Websense Enterprise is used by thousands of schools and universities worldwide. Websense allows educational institutions to transparently monitor, report on, and manage internet usage.

THOROUGH FILTERING WITHOUT COMPROMISING RESEARCH CAPABILITIES

Websense enables schools to filter out inappropriate content while allowing relevant information to reach students. This flexible and highly accurate filtering is possible because of the Websense Master Database. The Websense Master Database contains more than 30 million websites categorised into over 90 categories. Websense Enterprise permits school IT administrators to customise internet access policies by user, group, workstation, or network. Thus, it is easy to enable faculty to access a different range of sites than students.

Note for existing Websense customers
In order to meet BECTA's accreditation level for web filtering within an educational environment you must filter access to specific categories within Websense Enterprise or Websense Web Security Suite. Modifying any of these policies will invalidate the BECTA accredited Internet service. If you would like details on how to create the BECTA accredited policies, please send an email to becta_uk@websense.com quoting your subscription key and contact details and the information will be forwarded to you.

Websense is a member of the Internet Watch FoundationWebsense is an Associate Member of the Internet Watch Foundation and the Websense Master Database includes a category containing the URLs of web sites that are identified by the IWF as containing potentially illegal content.

CONSERVE EXPENSIVE NETWORK BANDWIDTH

MP3s, streaming video, and online chats require a great deal of bandwidth and can seriously affect the network's speed and performance. Websense allows schools to block sites with bandwidth-intensive content, thus improving overall network performance.

THE IMPLICATIONS OF GIVING STUDENTS IN THE UK ACCESS TO THE WEB

The issue of if, when, why and how schools and colleges manage their students' use of the internet is a complex one to deal with. The path to introducing a policy that is acceptable to both student and the educational authority as 'guardian' can be difficult. Should there be a demonstration of trust to enable students to carry out the research they need without heavy handed censorship? Or should there be policies and procedures in place that protect students from sites that are inappropriate and at the same time provide a level of security against web-based threats that will compromise the IT systems? Also, there are regulatory demands, such as the Data Protection and Freedom of Information Acts, to consider which require personal data to be made secure against theft, yet available to those authorised to view confidential or sensitive information.

Governing bodies need to understand the implications of using the internet and students need to be made aware of safe and responsible web surfing behaviour. In trying to balance the requirements of the governing bodies with the needs of the students, those responsible for IT need policies, procedures and technology to help, as trust is certainly not enough!

"We needed a solution that offered us more flexible and granular control over how the students and staff use the computing facilities, which we recognise as a valuable learning resource. The key is that we wanted to create a safe and secure environment for our users, without blocking legitimate content. This is what Websense delivered, and most vendors simply fall short of providing this high level of accuracy."
