Upgrading from web security version 7.7.x or earlier

See the second table in Upgrading Websense Web Protection Solutions to find out if your product can be directly upgraded to v8.0.x.
If your are upgrading from a version that does not support direct upgrade to v8.0.x, you can perform additional, intermediate upgrade steps. For example, the path might be:
v7.5 (Web Filter, software-only) > v7.7 > v8.0
v7.5 (Web Security Gateway) > v7.6 > v7.7 > v7.8 > v8.0
Policy information and most configuration details are preserved across intermediate upgrades.

Because hardware and operating system support has changed over time, the upgrade process for software (non-appliance) components is likely to require hardware and operating system updates. See Migrating web solutions to a new operating system for details.
If you are upgrading from a version prior to 7.5, given fundamental changes to software functionality, operating system support, and hardware requirements, the smoothest path to v8.0.x is to perform a fresh installation at the current version. See Installing Web Protection Solutions.
